Throughout history, sex has been viewed as a sacred act—a powerful union that transcends the physical and connects individuals to the divine.
Although often shushed and seen as taboo (yet commercialized) in Western culture, many ancient traditions recognized sexual energy as a potent force for healing, creation, and spiritual awakening.
As you’re probably aware, much of this sacred perspective has been lost in modern times, but by understanding ancient practices and rituals, we can begin to reclaim the sanctity of our intimate connections.
Many of us grew up experiencing the boom of casual sexual encounters, especially with the inception of dating apps, however we’re beginning to see a resurgence of people choosing to either abstain or remain celibate—and not always for obvious reasons.
This was something that became a primary focus for me back in 2016.
As I was deepening my healing journey, I became incredibly aware of just how much sex was affecting my mental well-being and spiritual hygiene, so I abstained from casual sex (and went viral for it!).
While people continue to choose which path works best for them, I figured we can take a trip down memory lane to remember the sacred practice of sexuality in ancient traditions that aren’t solely based on religious abstinence—quite the opposite, actually.
Sex wasn’t just sacred. It was a cosmic dance with the Divine.
Ancient Practices & Sacred Sexuality
In many cultures, sexuality was woven into spiritual traditions, emphasizing its divine nature:
Tantra (India): A spiritual path that regards sex as a means of achieving higher consciousness and divine union. Tantric practices teach mindful intimacy, energy exchange, and prolonged states of bliss.
Taoist Sexual Alchemy (China): Taoism teaches that sexual energy (Jing) is a vital life force that can be cultivated and refined for longevity and enlightenment.
Hieros Gamos (Sacred Marriage): In ancient Greece and Mesopotamia, ritualistic unions between priestesses and kings symbolized the merging of human and divine energies.
Indigenous Traditions: Many indigenous cultures honored sex as a sacred rite, believing it to be an offering to the divine and a way to maintain cosmic balance.
Why Sexual Energy is Sacred
Sexual energy is the foundation of creation, not just for producing life but for manifesting desires and spiritual evolution. In sacred traditions, sex is seen as a gateway to the Divine, an exchange of spiritual energy and a pathway to healing.
Sexual ecstasy mirrors states of transcendence found in deep meditation or prayer. During these (intentional) encounters, partners merge their auras and influence each other’s energetic fields.
Conscious intimacy can help release trauma, open blocked chakras, and restore emotional balance.
Unfortunately, over time, sex has become a superficial means to an end—a dopamine hit or detached attempt at intimacy, diluting the sacred experience and instead depleting our energy.
How Modern Culture Has Lost the Sacredness of Sex
In today’s world, sex has largely been reduced to a commodity—stripped of its spiritual depth and treated as either a purely physical act or a means of validation.
With the rise of hookup culture and digital connections, sex is often disconnected from emotional and spiritual bonding.
Meanwhile, mainstream porn promotes unrealistic, often unhealthy, depictions of intimacy, shaping distorted views on connection and pleasure.
Instead of being taught about the energetic and emotional significance of sex, many people receive a fear-based or superficial understanding of intimacy.
For that reason, many are disconnected from their body and spirit, engaging in sexual experiences without mindfulness which leads to unfulfilling or even energetically depleting encounters.
How to Reclaim the Sacredness of Sex
Sex is not something to be ashamed of or hidden. It’s also not just about creating a family. Sex is about energetic union—a dance with the Divine.
To restore the sacred perspective of sex, consider integrating conscious practices like mindful intimacy, sacred rituals, energetic protection and cleansing, exploring Tantra and sexual alchemy.
Engage in sex with presence, deep awareness, and an open heart. Incorporate intention-setting, breathwork, and energy exchange techniques before and during intimacy.
Be mindful of who you share your energy with and cleanse your aura after intimate connections. Your sacral chakra is where your sexual energy resides, but it’s also where your creativity and healing energy is stored.
Sexual energy is healing energy is creative energy. If you’re not intentional and careful with it, all of those aspects may become exposed to unhealthy attachments. Have you ever had dreams of someone after you’ve been physically intimate? Felt anxiety or weird energy in your body?
Yeah. That’s how deep it actually is.
Learn ancient techniques to elevate your sexual experience into a spiritual practice. Educate yourself and others about the deeper purpose of sexual energy beyond physical gratification.
By reawakening the sacredness of sex, we align with a higher purpose—one that honors intimacy as a divine gift rather than a mere indulgence.
When we shift our perspective, sex becomes a powerful act of love, transformation, and connection to the cosmos.
And that’s when the real fun begins!
