What are Profection Years?

Profections are an ancient Hellenistic technique that moves through the 12 houses of the astrological chart, one house per year, starting with the Ascendant (1st house) at birth. Each year of your life is associated with a specific house, and that house’s themes and ruling planet become the focal point for the year ahead.

By understanding your profection year, you can gain clarity on the dominant area of life that will demand your attention and growth, as well as which planetary transits will have the most influence on you during that time.

How Profection Years Work

Profections are cyclical and follow a 12-year pattern. With that said, your 1st House profection year happens at ages 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and so on. After 12 years, the cycle resets, and each new profection year emphasizes the same house themes, but with new lessons and experiences as you grow and evolve.

During each profection year, the traditional ruler of the activated house becomes the "Time Lord" for that year, meaning its transits and aspects play a major role in the themes of that year.

The traditional rulership for the houses are as follows:

For example, if you’re in a 2nd House profection year, look to the ruler of your 2nd House (based on your natal chart) for insights into the energies and experiences that will shape your year.
